Why do Tamil people have names such as Ramanuj, Ramaswami, Krishnan etc. when they do not have much appreciation for North Indians or Hindi or anything originating in North India?

Your conception is not totally false. At the same time, the conceptions also don't map to a majority.

//Tamil people don't have much appreciation for the North Indians.//
This is only a minority. Tamil people may not be able to speak hindi. Please don't mistake that they didn't learn because of hatred. Hindi is not a compulsory language here. It was only optional. Many students didn't choose it because their parents didn't know Hindi. Parents felt that they would not be able to help if their son/daughter strugles to score in Hindi, whereas they can in the case of Tamil. They also felt that hindi teachers are scarce and going to a Hindi tution would be waste of time because, languages are given less priority when compared to Maths and science subjects.
We also hate the enforcement of Hindi and Sanskrit.

Hinduism thrived here gloriously. We used to know Sanskrit. When the Britishers were trying to establish themselves as the rulers of our land, they deviced the strategy of divide and conquer. Since Chennai was one of the first places in India they landed, they started their plans from here. They invented a race called 'Dravidians'.
This story gave them the success in their mission of divide and conquer.

  • They said that the dravidians were indigeneous to Tamil Nadu and their native language is Tamil.
  • Their land and culture were later conquered by the Aryans from the north.
  • Hinduism, Hindi and Sanskrit were forcefully injected by the aryans.
  • Dravidians' original religion must have been Cristianity before they were forced into Hinduism by the aryans.
  • They insisted on showing resistance to aryans and their languages.
Post our independence, some politicians used the same aryan-dravidian theory to fight for the rights of the oppressed communities. They said,
  • Brahmins are aryans. They have been depriving the other communities of their jobs.
  • They are responsible for the untouchability culture/tradition in the society.
  • Beware of them.
This usage of aryan-dravidian theory for fighting for the oppressed classes in the society was taken advantage of by the evangelistic missionaries. Basically someone must come to bell the cat. Someone must arrange for an unbiased discussion about the validity of the aryan-dravidian theory.

The bottom line is there are many Hindus in Tamil Nadu. Infact, they are the majority here. Maari Amman festival, Rama Navami, Pongal, Deepavali, Krishna Jayanthi, Anjaneya Jayanthi, Thiruvadhirai, Navarathiri, Varalakshmi vratham and many other festivals are religiously celebrated here like any other states in India.

Like someone mentioned in one of the replies, we are proud guardians of Hinduism. We were the one who brought about the Bhakthi movement. Periyapuranam (poem about 63 Shiva devotees) is an epic that shows a different dimension of Bhakthi. Ramanujar, a legend among Vaishnavites was born here. Aandal (Andal), who can be said as the Tamil counter part of Meera was born here. 11 great Vishnu devotees were born here. Sage Agasthiyar was born here and there are many more. So this is very much a land where Hinduism thrives and flourishes still.

Love should be the language we speak. Let Hindi or Tamil or any other language not come between us.
